Would You Get Married In Your Family Home If You Could?

Thanks to the global pandemic, happy couples everywhere have really been struggling to forge ahead with their wedding plans – so much so that the Law Commission is now calling on the government to modernise laws so people can enjoy greater freedom over where they say their vows and the form their ceremonies can take.

The organisation is now consulting on proposals that would allow couples to hold ceremonies that are more meaningful to them, letting them have their weddings outside or in private family homes – which would also help make events simpler and less expensive to put on!

Current wedding laws were set in stone way back in 1836 and the Commission believes they’re no longer fit for purpose, no longer meeting the needs of many people keen to say their vows.

It also thinks that the process is inefficient and complicated, as well as working against some religious groups – so some people fail to comply with legal requirements and their marriage ends up not being legally recognised.

Proposals for reforms include outdoor weddings in parks, beaches and in private wedding venues, as well as on cruise ships and in private homes.

“A couple’s wedding day is one of the most important events in their lives, yet the 19th century laws are not fit for purpose and stop many couples having a wedding that is meaningful and personal to them,” family law commissioner professor Nick Hopkins said.

You can, however, have a drive-through wedding which might be one fun way to get around the current coronavirus problem if you don’t want to wait to get hitched! FREE NOW and private hire vehicle hailing app have just teamed up to offer the first covid-secure drive-through wedding service… so how about that for an idea?
